Readers' Book Club (6th+)
Jerusalem, 1947. Evil is circling closer, threatening even those who survived the Holocaust.
The Gates of Zion, the first book in THE ZION CHRONICLES, graphically portrays the courage
and hope of the Jewish people streaming into Israel after the Holocaust. The drama of history and
the heart-stopping life-and-death struggle of a nation are captured by bestselling authors
Bodie and Brock Thoene in the lives of the people who live on these pages. Ellie Warne, a young
American photojournalist, finds herself in Jerusalem in 1947. She unwittingly becomes a pawn in a
sinister, political chess game when she photographs some ancient scrolls discovered by Bedouins.
David Meyer, a decorated American war pilot, seems to love her dearly, but scholarly Jew, Moshe
Sachar has a purpose and commitment in life that intrigues her more than she can say. As everything
she believes is challenged, Ellie must decide whether to risk her life, and her heart, for a
people she has just met.
The authors, BODIE AND BROCK THOENE (pronounced Tay-nee), have written over 45 works of historical
fiction. That these best sellers have sold more than 10 million copies and won eight ECPA Gold
Medallion Awards affirms what millions of readers have already discovered—the Thoenes are not only
master stylists but experts at capturing readers’ minds and hearts.
*Due to such careful research, THE ZION CHRONICLES series is recognized by the American Library
Association, as well as Zionist libraries around the world, as classic historical novels and is
used to teach history in college classrooms.
Students will need to read the assigned chapters each week and come to class prepared to discuss
what s/he has read.
Fees: Each student will need to purchase his/her own copy of The Gates of Zion
(around $15.00) and bring it to class each week.
