Lord of the Rings: This class will take 2 semesters and can, for those who wish to give their children the exams, count for a literature credit. There will be weekly essay-writing homework in addition to reading from Lord of the Rings. They will need to have access to their own copies. The class also incorporates unit studies in linguistics, Beowulf, religious elements, poetry, theme & motif, and Arthurian literature. (We may not do all of these). The class will also learn to identify themes and stylistic elements common in literature and write essays using these styles and writing about the themes. Tests will be made available upon request to be administered at home. I will collect essays and make comments but will not grade them.
